Alright guys… I’m really curious… who’s SVP talking about at the 17:00 mark, the “American who fell down drunk and then shot the low round of the day”?
(And any other podcast discussion).

'02 Muirfield Tiger shoots 81 in round 3 and then fires the low round of the day (65) on Sunday. I think it’s The Cat.
Who was he paired with?
I don’t think it’s Tiger. Putting a significant amount of money against Tiger it’s sound logic even if he is drunk when the round starts. If he was paired up with someone from Japan/Korea that day though then it may be it. Also, didn’t he not recognize the guy at first?
To me, given that SVP put “a lot” of money on it leads me to believe it was a grinder that wasn’t a superstar that would give you pause.
Awesome pod though. SVP is my favorite talking head in sports.
Maybe Scott Hoch? Pretty unknown, American, scared low round of the day with a 66.
Edit: Looks like Scott was paired with Shingo Katayama of Japan…
and it’s prob one of the very first that SVP covered, since he said his bank account was not as flush at the time…
Paired with Jeff Maggert. So not likely it was Cat, but does fit the timeline of early on in SVP’s ESPN career. Really curious now.
in '99 the possibilities i see are DL3 or Scott Dunlap… DL3 doesn’t fit the mould really? Dunlap wasnt the low roudn of the day but was 1 stroke off
Jeff Maggert in 96??
how do we find their final round pairing?
I know right? You can find where they stood after 3 rounds to guess the 4th round pairing…
Pretty solid deductive work, but hard to imagine Hoch getting blotto when he was E after 3rd round, and given his general views on playing in UK I don’t picture him out stumbling and giggling in the streets of Muirfield in any case.
Zinger in 2000? Not sure he’s a big boozer either.
Rich Beem shot a Sunday 69 at Royal St. George’s in 2003 - can’t tell who he was paired with, but would have been close to Katsuyoshi Tomori (225 v. 224 thru 3 rounds).
Stewart Cink shot 68 on Sunday that day and would have been close to Tomori.
Did not even notice Cew Stink, but fits the story even better. Beemer’s reputation does still make me lean that way.
I’m not going to guess who the hungover golfer was, but would someone let Koepka know SVP said he only has 3 majors?
Steve Pate or Calc in 2000? Shot 69 and 68
Kinda near Tsyoshi Yoneyama
DLIII in 2001 fired a 67. could have been paired with Toru Taniguchi.
BUT, i think the winner is Duffy Waldorf in 2005 with the 68 from the back of the pack…could have been group with SK Ho who finished a few back.
Do the bets have to be in the same match? I dont think so, usually just near each other on the leaderboard.
Story is from 2016…
